Sunset Gower was the place to be on Saturday. It was a beautiful day and the fashionistas braved the sunlight in order to attend the Green Initiative Fashion Show presented by The The Gallery L.A. and the Green Youth Movement.

110 Years of Fashion retrospective
Presented by the California Market Center and WGSN, the 110 Years of Fashion retrospective was a lovely event with live music. The opening night reception featured fashion and art installations, which paired bloggers with designers in order to create exhibits that showcased fashion from the early 1900s to the 2000s. The clothing and accessories on display were provided by Aidan Mattox, BCBGMaxAzria, Be Seduced, Ben Sherman, Cynthia Steffe, Gold Hawk, Laundry (Shelli Segal), Mandalay, Sue Wong, and others. The presentations offered a nostalgic look at the history of fashion and how vintage inspires 21st Century Trends. - NIN

BOXeight Fashion: Refocus Fall/Winter 2010
BOXeight's "Fashion: Refocus" Fall/Winter 2010 opening-night event was held on Friday March 19th. The event presented an intimate behind the scenes look at fashion photo shoot. Attendees had the opportunity to view the shoot from start to finish – from watching the make-up artist (Dior) and hairstylists (Unite) in action, to the models being dressed by designers, to the final photo shoot where the photographer instructed the model on bringing his/her vision to life. Each designer had their own specific backdrop complete with props and lighting. The photographers shot the looks for the designers’ fall lookbooks and for a spread in LA Confidential magazine.

BoxEight Lookbook Events
BoxEight put a creative spin on Fashion Week by hosting several fashion installations that fused art, fashion, and photography while providing an insider's view of the creative process. Seven designers were chosen to create their own art installations in which their collection would be viewed in a unique artistic setting. The results were photographed and will be featured in the November issue of Flaunt.
The 3 day event kicked off with an awesome party hosted by Flaunt in celebration of the launch of their Eden issue featuring David LaChapelle’s work, which included a four page cover spread with Naomi Campbell. The fashionistas were decked out in their finest, the vodka was flowing, and the beats were fab. We were thrilled to run into Krys & Jack (Krys-N-Jack). These gals are true supporters of their fellow artists, and they are super cool as well. Krys looked super cute in a vintage flapper outfit, and Jack looked as cool as ever sporting one of their first tie designs. They make a great team both in and out of the showroom. We love them.
The other two nights focused on the actual installations themselves in which the designers worked with a crew to bring their 2010 lookbooks to life. Those in attendance got to view the process from start to finish from hair & make-up to lighting to the final shoots themselves. Featured designers included Project Runway alums Rami Kashou (shot by Garrett Suhrie), Jeffrey Sebelia (shot by Kurt Izwarienko) and Jerell Scott (shot by Peter Gurnz). Louis Verdad (shot by Don Flood), Corpus (shot by Patrick Hoelck), Skingraft (shot by Gitte Meldgaard), Michael Costello (shot by David C. Lee) and a few others also showcased their work.

Gen Art's Fresh Faces in Fashion
Gen Art & Rock Media kicked off Rock Fashion Week L.A. with their 12th annual Fresh Faces in Fashion event at The Peterson Automotive museum presented by Plastics Make It Possible. The theme of the event was Plastics Is the New Black! in recognition of the future of plastic in fashion and design. Plastic is the latest rage on the runways from bangles to Lucite heels to clear handbags. Inside the venue three live models were on display styled in clothing & accessories that incorporated plastic in ways that were not obvious to most. Did you know that without plastic faux fur wouldn't exist and skinny jeans wouldn't stretch? In an effort to inspire creativity Plastics Makes it Possible is also hosting a contest for new and established designers to create two womenswear looks from fabrics that include plastic based fibers, such as chiffon, rayon, spandex, & microfiber. The winner will receive $10,000 and a runway show at Gen Art's Fresh Faces In Fashion event in New York, February 2010. For more info visit http://www.discover.genart.org/.

Lauren Elaine @ The Los Angeles Theatre
Lauren Elaine presented her collection in an intimate setting at the Los Angeles theatre, which featured a mix of day and evening dresses. A number of fabrics were hand-dyed, which gave each piece a unique color pattern. With names like Persephone, Apollo and Aphrodite it was obvious that the collection was inspired by the goddesses of Ancient Greek mythology. A couple of pieces sported a 50's style influence. Delicate and free flowing a number of dresses featured braid & ruffle detailing. The Serena and Aphrodite gowns were adorned with Swarovski crystals and the Nightingale gown was accented with peacock feathers. During the finale Lauren came out wearing one of her creations. She blended in so perfectly with the models that for a second I thought it was a last minute addition. Turns out Lauren was an actress/model before launching her line in 2008.

Oliver Tolentino
Oliver Tolentino is the first Philippines-based fashion designer to expand into the United States. The young couturier/designer opened his first U.S. boutique on Melrose Ave in July 2009. A majority of his ready-to-wear and couture pieces are made from native Filipino fabrics such as piña, which is pineapple fiber. His Spring 2010 40 piece collection featured lots of beautiful bold colors. Stylish avant-garde pieces were mixed in with elegant sequined chiffon gowns and dyed piña draped gowns. A hand-dyed bustier cocktail dress was paired with a fully beaded bolero piña blouse. Oliver accentuated an electric blue pleated cocktail dress with a stunning beaded blue belt. I’m not a fan of green but I’d wear the long-sleeved hand-dyed celadon green cocktail dress any day. The first half of the runway show featured cocktail and ready to wear pieces, while the second half centered on his couture collection, which was amazing. There were a number of stunning pieces such as the silk taffeta purple ball gown that was embellished with hand-cut circular accents, which covered the entire skirt. The silk chiffon Grecian gown accented with Swarovski crystals was also spectacular. When the show was over Oliver received a standing ovation. It’s obvious that Mr. Tolentino has a bright future ahead.

LA Fashion Week: Out and About
First of all BiteMe! M+F would like to thank everyone that put us on the list and invited us to the shows. This wouldn't be possible without you.
Day 1: The week's events kicked off at Revolve's Flagship Boutique located at 8452 Melrose Ave. Revolve and Lovemade hooked up to present an "LA Fashion Week Launch Party". Guests were invited to mingle with various LA designers including the creators behind Anzevino and Florence, Corpus, Endovanera, Geren Ford, and Prodigal Daughter. The best part of the evening, besides the great DJ (DJ Cat NYC) was the people watching. The fashionistas (guys and gals alike) were all decked out in their finest. The great thing about fashion is that it is an expression of your own personal style and everyone in attendance was working it.
Day 2: In-between shows we mingled with guests. We were thrilled to run into Jacquetta and Krys of Krys n Jack. Krys was wearing one of their pieces from last night's runway show and also sported a pair of heels, which are new to their collection. True to form the shoes were accented with rivets and keys. Also in attendance were Megan and Katelyn from KM2shoes. The sisters looked as cute as ever, and of course they were wearing their fabulous heels. We were also fortunate enough to meet Em and Co owner Eveline Moel and we told her how much we loved her store and the support she offers to emerging artists in the fashion, music, and art community. Eveline then introduced us to Kimberly Cole, who happens to have close to 1 million fans on twitter. She also has an EP out titled "Superstar" (www.myspace.com/kimberlycole). Brad Beckerman founder of Bradford Tonic was generous enough to provide the mixers for the drinks. Brad has an amazing story, and his holistic drinks are not only good for you but they taste good too. http://www.bradfordtonic.com/. Before the next show started I spotted a girl in the crowd with an amazing necklace that seemed to glow. As suspected, it was her creation. http://www.lumigotech.com/ (The site is currently under construction so keep checking back.)
I also noticed a few people decked out in a men's dress shirt. One girl paired it with a pair of black tights and booties and the other belted it around the waist and wore it as a dress. Being that the shirt just barely covered her bum she should have considered wearing some funky tights underneath.

LA Fashion Week: Emerging Designers & Fashion Angels Awards
The Fashion Angel Awards Emerging Designer show (hosted by the City of Los Angeles and the Department of Cultural Affairs) was held on Tuesday October 13th. A group of guest designers, which included Louis Verdad, Nony Tochterman, Nick Verreos, Jeffrey Sebelia, and Vanessa Gonzalez, teamed up to pick the Fashion Angel Award winners. The winners of the first annual event were Phong Hong, Fernanda Carneiro, and duo Jacquetta O'Dell and Krysta Henry (Krys-N-Jack).
Born in Vietnam, but raised in Los Angels, Phong Hong, a FIDM alum, was the first to present. His Femme Noir collection was girly with a little bit of edge. Based mainly in neutral colors his romantic creations were accented with bows and ribbons. My favorite piece in the collection was a strapless pewter dress that featured a skirt adorned with sculpted roses.
Next up was Brazilian born Fernanda Carneiro (also a FIDM alum). Her collection was geared for spring with its floral fabrics and bright colors. Short, sweet, and perfect for a warm sunny day these creations were paired with some stunning shoes, which were provided by Chic Little Devil Style House. Unfortunately, two of the models hadn't quite mastered the art of walking in heels yet, and even though they didn't topple over their harsh walk took away from the beauty of the dresses. (Move over Miss Jay. I need to show these girls a thing or two about walking in sky high heels.)
The awards ceremony finished up with a show-stopping presentation by Krys-N-Jack. I don't think the audience was quit prepared for what they had to offer but fashion is about creativity, and they gave it to us three fold. The design duo behind the line— Jacquetta O'Dell and Krysta Henry—delivered a collection created from wood, leather, door hinges, metal, and keys. The models came down the runway in wood-paneled skirts, metal corsets, loin-clothes, and wood neckties. One model even sported a top adorned with rows of keys. I could hear the Project Runway judges now…"My gawd Nina, she looks like a valet key-holder exploded on her chest." or Tim Gunn, " Hmmm don't you think it's a bit Xena Warrior Princess? Carry on." All in all, the collection was very innovative, and the designers received a loud applause when they came out on the runway. O'Dell and Henry have been working together since 2003. They have a background in interior design, carpentry, and manufacturing. They also happen to oversee EM and Co's on-line boutique and design out of the stores location on 3rd Street.
After the show we mingled with the fashion crowd and happened to run into Nick Verreos, who happens to be very sweet. (For all you Project Runway fans make sure you don't miss the October 29th show.) Of course, as expected, there were many people in fabulous outfits despite the wet weather. However, our favorites happened to be the Harajuku twins and Roxy Contin and her friend. (myspace.com/roxxycontin).
Winners (in order on slide show) Phong Hong, Fernanda Carniero, and design duo Jacquetta O’Dell and Leslie Henry for Krys and Jack. Presented by the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angeles.

LA Fashion Week: SKINGRAFT
This night ended with a stellar presentation by Skingraft. Johnny Cota, Cassidy Haley, and Katie Kay are the creative force behind this edgy underground collection. Having made its debut at Fashion Week in March 2009 Skingraft's clothing blends raw underground fashion with high-end couture. The show kicked of with a performance-art dance piece. Inspired by Amelia Earhart the collection featured aviator caps and leather harnesses. Continuing with the theme, one model came down the catwalk wearing a beautiful grey strapless dress with a full length tiered skirt and a fake bird on her shoulder. I have to say that the attention to detail was amazing, especially on the blue leather vest, the leather jackets, and military inspired coats. Another great piece was a little cocktail dress that sported a black & white leather corset and ruffle tiered skirt. However, nothing was quite as spectacular as the Alexander McQueen inspired grand finale dress. This dramatic Victorian inspired piece was adorned with a spiked leather vest, and the model marched slowly down the runway so we could all bask in its beauty.
