BOXeight's "Fashion: Refocus" Fall/Winter 2010 opening-night event was held on Friday March 19th. The event presented an intimate behind the scenes look at fashion photo shoot. Attendees had the opportunity to view the shoot from start to finish – from watching the make-up artist (Dior) and hairstylists (Unite) in action, to the models being dressed by designers, to the final photo shoot where the photographer instructed the model on bringing his/her vision to life. Each designer had their own specific backdrop complete with props and lighting. The photographers shot the looks for the designers’ fall lookbooks and for a spread in LA Confidential magazine.
Night one featured looks by Skin.Graft, Funktional, GoldSpun, and Isabel Lu.
Skin.Graft (by Jonny Cota and shot by Ben Cope) had an elaborate set-up. It was obvious a lot of work went into the production of this presentation. The models sported white painted faces, smudgy eye shadow, and crimson red lips, which paired perfectly with Skin.Graft's signature leather and fur creations. A pregnant model clad in a harness belt and gothic knit sweater dress created the biggest buzz of the evening.
Funktional's (by Jenny Park and shot by Ninelle Efremova) backdrop was very artistic and complimented the grunge inspired collection. Models posed amongst discarded vinyl records in slouchy jersey tops and leather skirts.
Isabel Lu's (by Sophia Kim and shot by Damon Kidwell) retro inspired looks were shot against an edgy and futuristic set-up. A model, that was decked out in a sculpted dress comprised of a bustier and shoulder pads, channeled Madonna's feistiness while posing.
GoldSpun (shot by Adam Secore) stuck to a minimalistic vibe in which to display their sporty looks. Models donned skinny white jeans and crisp white shorts. GoldSpun is known for its signature jeans, which are fashioned from denim that is milled by masters in Japan using traditional techniques.
Other bookings prevented us from attending Saturday and Sunday's events – wish there was a way to be two places at once. Saturday's presentations featured:
Lloyd Klein (shot by Robert Voltaire)
Eduardo Lucero (shot by August Bradley)
Le Sang des Betes (by Trang Chau and shot by Laura & Steven Duncan)
Michael Costello (shot by Ben Cope)
Lekuin – (by Leticia Garcia and shot by Dirk Mai)
And Sunday night's events presented:
Orthodox (shot by Catherine Asanov)
Kanvis (shot by Robert Sigler)
Gabby Applegate (shot by Sam Hessamian)
Future Heretics (by Bryden Lando and shot by Peter Gurnz)
Postage (shot by Ben Cope)
We always love attending BOXeight's fashion week events because the studio has a warm, comforting vibe, and we always feel at home when we are there. Maybe it’s because fashion lovers, stylists, designers, photographers, and models all get to hang out together in a relaxed setting or maybe it's because the music is always great and the bartenders are friendly. Or, maybe it's because Otis (BOXeight's resident pooch) makes you feel right at home. Otis took a liking to us and would always come back for hugs and rubs after making the rounds. We attempted to shoot our own installation—what we dubbed "The Otis Series"—but the photos didn't turn out so well due to the dim lighting. Oh well. Note to self: Next time we go to BOXeight bring treats for Otis.
