Kelly Bailey of Chrome Queen

Kelly Bailey is more than just a pretty face, which is why I wasn’t surprised when I found out she used to be a model. However, I was surprised to find out that the wholesome looking beauty designs a line of biker tees. Biker styles have always held a warm place in the hearts of fashion-lovers; which is why her designs will appeal to avid bikers, motorcycle enthusiasts, and overall disobedient souls. Even though Bailey’s Chrome Queen line is relatively new it won’t be long before fashion mavens will be revving to adorn themselves in her grungy biker-chic garments that glamorize grittiness and rebelliousness.

BM: Tell us a little about Chrome Queen and how you got your start in fashion.

KB: Chrome Queen was inspired by a girl who was very involved with the “biker” scene but was always looking for cute, stylish, and trendy items to wear on her trips.

I got my start in fashion at the age of 11. I started modeling and was working a lot in major cities. I ended up getting involved in retail management and also worked for several agencies - modeling as well as working as a fashion director, stylist, hair and makeup artist for national photographers, Public Relations expert, and gave local lectures at high schools and colleges.  I also dabbled in interior design, restaurant management, photography, and most recently fashion design.

How did you come up with the name for your line?

I have a sketch book that I have been keeping for years. I always got it out at night and either sketched designs or names that came to mind. I got inspiration from different bike events and travelling that I had done over the years.

Tell us about your designs and where you draw your influence from?

My designs incorporate the “biker chick” and fashionista all in one. It’s about bringing the “biker and high fashion” scene and merging it into one entity.

Describe the type of person who wears your clothes.

The girl who loves fashion and keeps up with the trends, but also likes motorcycles, punk and classic rock, and isn’t afraid to take risks.

What are you currently working on?

I am currently working on an additional women’s line and a men’s line to coincide with Chrome Queen. It’s something that has been in the works for a while now.

What inspired you to branch out into menswear?

As I attended different bike events, and was a vendor at most, I had a lot of men wanting to see something different and trendy to wear. Although very tough on the outside, men (even “bikers”) are into what style they are projecting as they ride.

What has being a designer taught you?

You need to stand by what inspires you and what you love to do. I am truly passionate about fashion, music, design, and being creative.

What do you think is the most important trait of a fashion designer?

Creativity and always standing behind an idea that you are passionate about. I think that most fashion designers that I love are not only trend setters but also have the ability to inspire everyone around them.

Who are your style icons?

Designers: Betsey Johnson, Vera Wang, Alexander McQueen, Lavin, Tom Ford, Agent Provocateur, Roberto Cavalli…the list is endless.

Bands: Duran Duran, New Order, INXS, Pet Shop Boys.

Hollywood Style Icons: Sarah Jessica Parker, Cameron Diaz.

Where are some of your favorite places to shop (boutiques or online)?

Intermix, CUSP, and Barneys Co-Op.

How do you feel art, fashion, and music influence each other?

Art, fashion, and music go hand in hand. I couldn’t imagine having one without the other. Right now I’m obsessed not only with 80’s music but Nagel Art and bright colors that inspired that era.
