My style is unconventional…cliché to say? Maybe, but I can think of no other way to describe what I do. I have sketched since I can remember but I always felt there was something missing. I started taking art seriously last year, painting my experiences and images from my culture onto canvas. I strengthened my craft by diving head first into painting with color and mixed media and there's no turning back!
Can you tell me a bit about the materials you used?
I'm not limited to materials. I will use anything from rocks to bullets to add dimension to my pieces.
What has being an artist taught you?
Being an artist has taught me the real meaning of freedom. I got accustomed to waking up, clocking in, eating lunch at a certain time, and then clocking out just to go home and watch TV. Art has opened up a door to liberation. I can express my thoughts, desires, vices, and perspectives on this life I live with paint and brushes. It's an amazing feeling.
How do you feel art, fashion, and music influence each other?
Well, being that everything is somehow related to art it's quite easy to see the influence. I believe the process of creation is what defines an artist. In regards to fashion, we could all be walking around wearing white tee shirts if clothing was just something to keep us from being naked. When designers introduce color, form, and print it takes on a different dynamic…it becomes art. Music can be seen in the same light. Instead of listening to a continuous looped beat...drums, guitar, and keys are added to make it a unique experience from artist to artist.
What artists do you admire?
I like the works of Stephen Lopez, Kadir Nelson, and Charles Bibbs.
What would you like to be remembered for?
I would like to be remembered for my commitment to expression and my perspectives on life. I capture people frozen in time and hope the viewer can see my vision, while also formulating their own opinions...that's the beauty of art.
