Artist Interview: Yvette LaForce

BM: Tell me a little about your art and what makes it so unique?

Y: I believe and, more importantly, have been told that the uniqueness of my art comes from my brush stroke, my use of vivid colors, and the way that I layer my paint. Most of my pieces have up to 15 layers of paint, which results in you being able to see through layers of colors and spots of color showing through in different areas of the canvas. Also, my subject matter, whether it is abstract or not, are always what is inspiring me at the moment. I have painted all different subjects and will continue to do so either in abstraction or reality.

BM: Did you receive any formal training or does it come natural to you?

Y: From the time I was a little girl I would put myself to sleep by painting with my little finger in the air. I have been creating since the age of six years old and always knew I would pursue Art as a career because my Mother was very artistic and inspired me and supported me always. My first mentor was my high school teacher, Rachel Lawrence, whom taught me to paint what was in my mind and gave me my first lessons in color and basic rules in composition. I entered different competitions throughout high school and upon winning first place most of the time gave me the confidence that I was good at painting. I attended private classes in Watercolour and Drawing from masters I admired in Northern California, which gave me ideas and knowledge to put my own style into action.

In 2013 I sent my portfolio and applied to the Art Students League in New York City. This had always been a dream since I knew that many of the great American artists had studied there including Peter Max, Jasper Johns, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, Robert Rauschenberg, and Andy Warhol just to name a few. The great icon Knox Martin was teaching a master class in abstraction and had to preview your work before he would allow you in the class. Many of his student’s had been studying with him for 15 plus years. I soon received the news that he had accepted me, and I made my move to New York City. This is where I felt my life began as a true working Artist. I became very close to Mr. Martin, and I happily painted directly in front of him, which allowed me to be critiqued at every point of my paintings. I also took a master class in sculpture and became fascinated with the ability my hands had to mold the clay into any shape or form. Clay is such a natural medium, and I will continue to sculpt.

BM: Can you tell me a bit about the materials you use?

Y: I am versed in watercolour and consider this material my first love. Watercolour is actually the most difficult medium to use because water has such a life force of its own. I love the way you can make one color flow into the next or make the colors soft or hard. Acrylic became my love, and I use mostly in my paintings now. I love the array of colors and the ability to make them thinner or heavier in body, which allows me to change the feel of each painting.

                                             (A Day in NYC)

BM: What inspires your work?

Y: My work is inspired by life. At different times I am inspired by different things. People and the unique look of the face, eyes, or even style always stay in my mind. Places I visit around the world have given me inspiration on colors and textures. The work of the greats have always inspired me as I look through countless books I own on Picasso, Matisse, Leroy Neiman, etc. I study their brush stroke and use of colors and composition. I am also very inspired by fashion. The styles and colors, which are current, give me vision and lead to great abstracts. Basically, everything I see on a daily basis catches my eyes and stays somewhere in my mind to be pulled up at time of creation.

                                                  (Baby!)

BM: What has being an Artist taught you?

Y: Being and accepting the projection the world puts on you as an Artist can either be positive or negative. It has taught me to trust my judgement in what I am creating and has taught me to accept criticism or rejection. Being an Artist means being different from everybody else. I feel more than the average person because you must feel deeply to create. Being an Artist has taught me to know my place in the world - meaning that what I create today will live much longer than I, hopefully, for many lifetimes after I am gone. I will leave a legacy to my children and the world of how beautiful I see people places and things. Being an Artist has taught me to be strong in the woman I am because this truly is a very difficult career, but the most rewarding when you see the creation at its end. I was born an Artist.

                                                (Dusk In The Grove)

BM: What has been one of your favorite creations so far?

Y: It’s true that some works are closer to my heart than others. The sculpture I created at the Art Students League is one of my all time favorites because I was allowed to sculpt my own version of the model, which I molded after an abstract figure of my grandfather. It is a muscular being that has exceptional muscles. He is thinking of his life and his children, which are portrayed as small egg shapes falling out of his brain onto the hole in front of him. He is very abstract and yet strong and beautiful. In painting, one of my favorite is an abstract image of a mother and child. The heads are done in ovals and her breast is oval. The colors are a deep orange red along with turquoise blue and black. It’s a stunning painting and the composition is perfect!

                                                (Damas Al Fresco)

BM: Is there one piece that you can’t bear to part with?

Y: To be honest, I have come to learn that my art belongs to the world and those whom want it. I am not the kind of artist that gets attached to any piece. When I am creating the piece it is the most important thing in the world to me. Once I have achieved what I believe is my original idea for any work I sign it and with my signature I am saying, “Goodbye, I love you.” to the piece and that is that.

                                                    (Look At Me)

BM: Is your art currently on display anywhere?

Y: My art is on display on the website E Gallerist, whom I am signed with. I also post pictures of my work as it is done on my FB page (Yvette LaForce) and also my Studio Yvette page. I post all of my work on Instagram (@Yvette_laforce) and on Pinterest (Artist Yvette).

BM: Where can people purchase your work?

Y: My work can be purchased either on the E Gallerist.com site or by reaching me personally. If you see something you like you can direct message me on any of the above mentioned social medias or through my email Galleryredlasvegas@yahoo.com. I will always give you the best price possible as it is more important for me to find good homes for my art work than anything else.

BM: How do you feel Art, Fashion, and music influence each other?

Y: I believe Art, Fashion, and Music are intertwined as one. When I am creating I always listen to my favorite music—whether it is slow music or a fast pace to go along with my brush stroke—music is a part of every creation I can think of. Fashion sets the stage for many things in life - the color of the moment or the texture of fabrics always comes into play when I am creating. I have always loved fashion in every form and dress in the manner I feel inspired on that day - it can be a beautiful vintage caftan or a great pair of jeans. I am always dressing the way I feel represents me as an Artist. Ironically, it never fails that when I am out in public the first thing I get asked is, “Are you an Artist?” and I happily answer, “YES!!!
