Concept SS2013

Concept founder Mike Vensel decided to try something new this season. Instead of hosting shows over the course of three days he held one show at Siren Studio in Hollywood, CA. The format was also a bit different – alternating informal installations between fashion shows. The structure was a bit like what you’d expect from NY Fashion week with shows starting at noon and continuing until 10 p.m. Guests could stay for the entirety or just pop in for a few shows.

The installations, which were approximately 20 mins long, where held in one room and the runway shows in another. Attendees were ushered outside in between showcases where they happily mingled while drinking cocktails courtesy of Hard Luck Vodka or rehydrated with Activate water and Vita Coco coconut water. Being that it was 90 degrees outside Hard Luck Vodka also offered alcohol infused snow cones for those who wanted to cool off.

I arrived just in time to catch Camila X Castillo’s CXC debut presentation. The theme of the collection was “Alien” and it was evident in the construction and design of the clothes. The futuristic looks were quite cool. The pleating and cutouts in the leather represented the skeletal structure of the alien, and the honeycomb mesh underneath resembled scales.  Hailing from Venezuela, designer Camila x Castillo is quite talented. I look forward to seeing more from her in the future.

After the installation we headed over to the next room to see what martinMartin had in store.  Before the show began one of the photographers said “I wonder what martinMartin will show us today?” The other photog replied “Black and White.” While it’s true that martinMartin favors a color pallet of black and white the husband and wife duo (Eric Martin and Diane Moss-Martin) also threw some red into the mix. The collection was comprised of a number of androgynous pieces that would look good on either sex. The guys and gals both wore long skirts or harem inspired pants. Everything was layered, which is a part of martinMartin’s design aesthetic, and the collection had a rugged romantic streetwear feel to it.

Eric and Diane closed out the show with a beautiful evening gown to prove that they are more than just a one note fashion label.
