Annie Wood is a woman of many talents. She’s an actress (film, television, theatre, and voice-over), writer, artist, and an award winning playwright. She’s also the founder of a volunteer website www.dogoodstuff.org, and she frequently contributes articles to the Huffington Post.
She’s charming, witty, and downright delightful and I’m fortunate enough to have her as a friend. Hopefully, after this interview you’ll adore her as much as I do.
Annie, you are a very talented lady – actress, writer, artist, and photographer—are you more passionate about one over the other?
Ever since I can remember I’ve been drawn to creating. When I was a little kid my obsession was about being an actress. I took my first class when I was ten and got my first agent when I was 12. I dreamed of going to Broadway. I was in-love with musicals. Although, I wrote my first story when I was eight and the joy of photography found me early on too. I often feel like I’m a writer who acts and creates visual art as well. Basically, I just feel passionate about living a creative life each and every day.
What gives you the most pleasure in your career as an artist (in terms of all you do)?
I derive joy from much, but it’s through my writing where I feel I can express myself the most effectively.
You have such a great energy about you. What do you attribute it to?
I get asked this a lot! I honestly think that I mostly came in this way. I remember being a “spaz” as a kid. And, I remember as an adult people sometimes thinking I was “too much.” If not for my daily yoga and meditation practice I think I’d be too much for myself! I’m happy that I have found a way to funnel my energy into creative projects. I think it’s important to find things you love doing that you don’t need to depend on others for. Something you can do on you own that brings you joy. Being in nature energizes me and I also eat a fairly clean diet and try to live mindfully. I check in with myself throughout the day to see how I’m feeling.
You have a web series called Karma’s A Bitch. Can you tell us a little about it, and where can people see the episodes.
Yes! I wrote, created, and star in the series. It’s about Karma coming down to earth as a human and making people take responsibility for their actions. I also wrote a follow up series, Instant Karma. Both can now be seen on Seed and Spark. (Click here to view Karma's A Bitch and here to watch Instant Karma.
Have any of your scripts been picked up for television?
Back in the ‘90s I hosted and co-produced the nationally syndicated dating game show for the WB called “BZZZ!” I wrote some funny promos for that, that got on the air. But, I’m still working on getting a TV pilot made or a feature. I have had a few short films produced. (Click here to see Annie's t.v. and film roles.)
You’ve written several books is there a new one in the works?
I’m currently working on a book of memoir essays and art!
(Annie’s books can be found on Amazon.com)
Where does the inspiration come from for your stories?
I always say that I’m easily inspired…Because it’s true. I’m inspired by just about everything that happens around me and inside of me…good or bad - I see stories everywhere.
Did you have any formal training in jewelry design and creation? How did you come to realize your talent?
I guess we never really know if we can do something until we try. I’ve never made jewelry before but I was looking to add more items to my Etsy shop that fit into my “good vibes” philosophy. I just started exploring how I could use the paint that I already had and I started playing around. The end result felt good to me so I put them up and they started selling! I’m very pleased that people like them. And thanks again for buying a ring! I love seeing it on you!
(I love it! It’s a fabulous ring.)
What is your design philosophy?
I just jump in and play. If the end result makes me feel something…anything…I’m happy.
You are a very talented photographer and you recently started painting. What is the creative process for your artwork?
I mostly leap into whatever it is I want to do. But, I also keep many, many notes. If I get an idea in the car, in the middle of night, in the bathtub, while doing yoga (all of this happens a lot) I will write it down or speak into my recording app so I don’t forget the idea. Each morning I wake up and ask myself, “What will I create today?” Then I do it.
Where can one buy your beautiful creations?
I like to send people to my main site (www.anniewood.com) because there’s a SHOP button that will take you to my store and a Karma button that will take you to my series and a bunch of other stuff about my acting and writing. (Enter code IHEARTANNIE for 10% off at checkout.)
What makes your products so unique?
They are all infused with my good vibes. :)
When things aren’t moving quickly – if I’m not selling, if I don’t book an acting job, if no one buys my art off of a gallery wall…I have to sit myself down for a talk so I don’t get discouraged. I have to remind myself that I’m here on this planet to create and to focus on that. The rest will follow. Just not necessarily on my timeline.
What advice would you give to someone interested in selling their goods on Etsy?
I am a HUGE researcher. Read the seller’s handbook they give you. Listen to the etsy seller podcast. Join etsy teams, ask questions. Study stores that you like and see what they’re doing. I also found a bunch of webinars you can take. They usually offer one free webinar even if you don’t sign up for a whole course. I always walk away having learned something just from the free webinar.
What is your motto?
Keep creating. Keep positive. Keep showing up.
What is next for you? Are there any special projects in the works?
The book of memoir essays and art that I mentioned earlier. I’m also always auditioning, and I have a few of my screenplays out there in the world - so you never know what will come of things.
What would you most like to be remembered for?
Hmmmm…maybe it’ll be something specific that I haven’t discovered yet. But, overall I’d like to be a positive example of how to love yourself and express yourself in ways that create a life of joy for yourself and others. I would like to live an inspired and inspiring life.
