Mindless Self Indulgence’s latest, How I learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence, kicks off with the high octane blast of “Witness,” which is a great opener and sets the tone for the mayhem that is to follow. How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit…is the band’s first new album in 5 years. Not only does it boast an incredibly long title but it is also holds the record for the second most funded Kickstarter music campaign (raising $225,000). Yup, the fans love M.S.I. so much they were happy to contribute their hard earned cash in order to make this release happen. Needless to say, loyal followers of the band will dig this record; however, new comers will have to accept that the group’s genre busting mix of punk, hip-hop, and bombastic electronics are an acquired taste, so a few repeat listens may necessary.
I dug these guys when I reviewed their first album way back when, and I still dig them today. It’s nice to know that Jimmy Urine and crew have stayed true to their roots and still produce tunes that make no apologies to the listener. The fifteen agro electro punk dance tracks that comprise this disc dish out a relentless aural assault; thus, proving that M.S.I. haven’t lost their chaotic edge. And, Jimmy’s tongue-in-cheek lyrics present a sense of irony that is ridiculously sharp. Highlights include the incredibly catchy “You’re No Fun Anymore Mark Trezona,” “Stalkers (Slit My Wrists),” “It Gets Worse,” and “Jack You Up,” which is a bad ass tune filled with lots of attitude. One thing is for certain, M.S.I. will never be a commercial success (nor would they want to be), but for what they do they do it well. How I Learned to Stop Giving a Shit and Love Mindless Self Indulgence is musical mayhem at its finest. Do yourself a favor…break away from the mainstream and pick up this release when it drops on May 14th – NIN
