I specifically stopped by CONCEPT on Saturday to see and support Anh Volcek - designer extraordinaire behind L’une. I meet and fell in love with Anh’s designs last October. It’s hard to believe that someone so sweet and animated could be inspired by pain. Her Fall/Winter 2011/12 collection is titled ‘From Water to Ice’ with water representing her birth at sea while her family was escaping the war in Vietnam and Ice representing the pain she endured from being abducted at the age of 8 for a year. It has been said that beauty is spawned from personal tragedy and in Anh’s case it lead her to design a very stunning collection. The line centered upon Asian and military influences and featured a contrast of textures. On display was a really cool cocktail dress made from melted plastic– a technique Anh learned while working in Paris. I was very impressed with this collection. I have to say, Anh is very talented.
I was happy to see that Season 7 Project Runway contestant Mila Hermanovski also had an installation on display, which showcased pieces from her Fall/Winter 2011 Recycled Cashmere capsule collection.
Curly-V unveiled his first collection at CONCEPT. The theme was happiness and it suited the designer’s upbeat personality. The clothes are designed for the trendsetting girl who isn’t afraid to take chances. Curly-V is inspired by inner beauty and a person’s unrelenting spirit to follow their dreams.
Emmy Award-winning make-up artist Melanie Mills’ installation was collaboration with bikini designer Ashley Paige. At the age of 18 Ashley left Florida with $300 in her pocket to pursue her dream in fashion. Within her first year of production she landed 8 magazine covers including the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issues and now her bikinis are favored by A-List celebrities. The exhibit, which was set in a 1940’s Hollywood boudoir room, featured models with Geisha hairstyles created by Aubrey Loot’s Studio DNA. They wore one-of-a-kind bikinis designed by Paige and were decorated with ornate body art that was hand glitterized by Mills, who is also the head make-up artist for “Dancing with the Stars”. Mills was also promoting her new body make-up product GLEAM Body Radiance.
On a side note, I have to mention that Ashley also runs a non-profit organization called RuffHouZen Rescue. She often brings homeless dogs down the runway wearing shirts that say “Save a Stray” and hosts weekly pet adoptions at her boutique-studio in Hollywood. The studio is located at 1616 Cahuanga Blvd. Hollywood, CA. 90028. Adoptions are held every Sunday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Caffé Etc. located at 6371 Selma Ave. Hollywood, CA. 90028. Ashley is also the process of starting her own Animal Sanctuary. Please visit http://www.ruffhouzen.org/ to donate towards the cause or sign up to be a foster parent. Ashley you ROCK!
Since I had only come to view L’Une’s current collection I wasn’t planning on catching any shows. However, I happened to arrive just as Science and Numbers’ runway show was about to start, so I decided to check it out. Karyna Myres creates everyday wear for those who like to look chic while on the go. The collection, based mainly in graphite and black, featured a number of tailored pieces and sexy silhouettes.
