Liv Warfield – The Unexpected

(Kolbalt)

Currently touted as a “You Oughta Know” artist by VH1 Soul, Liv Warfield is a force to be reckoned with. Her latest, The Unexpected, is a solid release that mixes classic soul with elements of rock ‘n’ roll, sultry R and B, and straight up sexy blues. Liv’s performed with the likes of B.B. King, Al Green, and Prince’s New Power Generation so you know this girl has some serious cred.

Warfield’s powerhouse vocals and sultry timbre is highlighted throughout this disc, especially on the jazz inspired “Black Bird.” The syncopated horns and searing electric guitar on “Why Do You Lie” escort you on a musical step back in time. (Click here to see her performance on Jimmy Fallon.) The foot stomping “Catch Me if You Can” calls to mind the Eurythmics “Would I Lie to You?” The Gospel tinged “Lena Blue” conjures up memories of the South. The song is short, sweet, and downright enjoyable.

While it’s not my usual cup-o-tea there is an impressive array of standout tracks on The Unexpected. The emotion Warfield pours into each tune is impressive. – NIN
