Macy’s Passport Presents Glamorama 2011 @ The Orpheum Theatre

I was very excited over the opportunity to cover Macy’s Glamorama. Mainly because the event combined fashion and music and also supported a cause we here at BiteMe! believe in – the fight against HIV/AIDS. Plus, proceeds from this fundraiser went to benefit two organizations that we also support: AIDSProject Los Angeles and Project Angel Food.

While waiting in the press line I overheard someone say “I think that’s the Karl.” Then another asked, “Is that the Karl?” It took a minute for it to register that they were talking to me. “Yes it is,” I said. “I haven’t seen it on someone yet. It looks perfect on you,” The girl said. My response: “Thank you. I figured this would be the right occasion to wear it.”

The theme of the 29th annual fashion gala, hosted by Pauley Perrette, was ARTrageous. It was quite fitting because the charity benefit was off the hook. The musical performances were energetic, the visuals were amazing, the fashion show was spectacular, and the celebrities looked fabulous. Everyone was dressed up and dolled up.

The interactive runway presentations featured looks from Tommy Girl, Rachel Rachel Roy, Armani Jeans, Calvin Klein, Tracy Reese, BarIII, Kenneth Cole Reaction, Karl Lagerfeld, and Papi. I really wish all fashion shows were like this. It was so much more enjoyable than watching models parade in a straight line down the catwalk.  (All the featured looks are currently available at Macy’s. Some are even exclusive for Macy’s, such as Bar III and Karl Lagerfeld.)

Sharon Stone led a moving tribute to the legendary Dame Elizabeth Taylor, who worked with Macys for 25 years in the fight against AIDS and helped raise over $29 million for those living with the disease. Taylor’s grandsons Quinn Tivey & Tarqiuin Wilding joined Stone and shared their gratitude on their grandmother’s behalf.
Electro-pop quartet Far East Movement was the first act to take the stage. Their high energy set got the crowd dancing as they performed a number of their hits including “Like a G6” and “Rocketeer.” There is no denying that these guys know how to churn out a catchy tune.

After a few more runway presentations Cee Lo Green sang a medley of tunes from his repertoire and brought the house down with a confetti fueled finale that featured his smash hit “Forget You.” I was impressed. Cee Lo has an amazing voice.

Afterwards everyone headed over to the California Mart for the ARTlandish after party, which featured food from Along Came Mary and treats from See’s Candy and Pinkberry. American Express sponsored the outdoor lounge, and Patrón hosted an elaborate photo booth so guests could commemorate the evening.

We definitely have to say a BIG “Thank You” to Macy’s and everyone who helped put this spectacular event together. We had a blast. I highly recommend attending this fundraiser in the future. You’ll have a great time while helping out a good cause because, let’s face it, AIDS affects everyone. Let’s ban together and make it a thing of the past not the future.
