2011 Grammy Style Studio - Part 4

Of course the Grammy Style Studio wasn’t just about the ladies. There was plenty of stuff on hand for the men as well.

The pairing of M. Cohen with Kanvis was quite genius because both brands mesh together nicely. Israeli born Maor Cohen makes mens, womens, and unisex jewelry. Having designed since a young age his creations—which are made from brass, copper, gold, silver, and leather—are great for layering. Representing a balance between rough and delicate I can see a number of rockers wearing M. Cohen’s creations on stage.

Launched by Kfir Levy and Omer Levy, Kanvis specializes in relaxed, casual apparel made from jerseys and knits. Their asymmetric jackets, wispy knit tops, and neutral henleys often feature unique hardware detailing. The line—which offers something for men and women—is edgy, raw, and minimalistic. The creators of Kanvis told me they plan on doing a collaboration with M. Cohen in the near future. Stay tuned for further details.

TW Steel showed off their bold statement making watches. Striking, trendy, and affordable the Dutch designed TW Steel is a respected brand name. This internationally recognized company manufactures 124 different models. Racecar drivers and athletes favor TW Steel watches because they are more than just an accessory – they represent a lifestyle.

Marmol Radziner had some unique unisex jewelry on display. Marmol Radziner is actually an L.A. based architectural and design firm founded by Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner. Marmol Radziner’s concept jewelry line is an extension of the firm’s design philosophies. The idea for the collection was born out of Ron’s frustration of the inability to find jewelry that suited his aesthetics, so he decided to create his own using the leftover scraps from metals used to make the buildings his firm creates. (Talk about being resourceful.) The pieces—rings, bracelets, and cuffs—are made from commercial-grade bronze and are designed to display depth and texture. They are crafted in the same local workshop where the firm’s architectural models and full-scale building details are made. The metal shop craftsmen individually fabricate and finish each item. The cool thing about Marmol Radziner jewelry is that the patinas of each piece evolve over time in response to the wearer.

As we all know rockers and rappers love to wear caps, so it was only fitting that New Era had a suite at the Grammy Style Studio. When I walked in the lyrics to Jay-Z’s “Empire State of Mind” (featuring Alicia Keys) popped into my head: “I made the Yankee hat more famous than a Yankee can.” True dat! New Era is the official on-field cap of major league baseball and they also make a variety of other sports caps and apparel as well. What was really cool is that they set up a table where guests could custom make their own caps and when the event was over they planned on auctioning the caps off and donating the proceeds to MusiCares.

Believe it or not I am a big fan of Unholy Matrimony, so I was very happy when I came upon Brett Westfall’s suite. If you’re not familiar with Brett’s line of wearable conceptual art you owe it to yourself to visit the Case Study Unholy Matrimony boutique located at 140 N. La Brea Ave. L.A. CA 90036. Brett’s designs have defied the expectations of mainstream fashion since 2002, so much so that Rei Kawakubo asked him to collaborate on a collection for Comme des Garcons. I can definitely see Gwen Stefani, Adam Lambert, and the members of AFI in Unholy Matrimony.
